1970년 대에 미 의회는 미국의 전임 대통령들을 모두 추모하는 의미에서 ‘대통령의 날’이라는 이름으로 하루를 정하여 기념하기로 결정하고 그 날짜를 매년 2월의 세 번째 월요일로 정했다. 그러나 많은 주들에서는 이 날을 여전히 ‘조지 워싱턴의 날’로 부르고 있다.
